MADHARE UPTON WEEKENDER

Bringing Two New Events To The Upton Triathlon

With the Upton Triathlon having been running successfully for 14 years, Cube was asked to help grow the event into a bigger offering over a full weekend. The idea of staging an Upton Ultra event had been on Cube’s agenda for many years, and adding a well established MadHare cycling event within the mix, offered the perfect solution.

The Cube team therefore added two extra events to the Saturday Triathlon/Duathlon: an Ultra Marathon on the Saturday and a cycling Sportive on the Sunday. Three F&B concessions were also implemented, although, sadly, the plan to host a party on the Saturday night was postponed until 2022, due to current covid restrictions.

THREE EVENTS. ONE WEEKEND.

THE ROUTES

UPTON ULTRA

The 60km route started and finished at Fish Meadow Farm, just over the bridge from the historic riverside town of Upton-On-Severn, Worcestershire, WR8 0PB.

The route travelled north out of Fish Meadow along the River Severn and along the Severn Way, before crossing the final battlefield of the English civil war which was fought in 1651 with Oliver Cromwell’s army defeating Kings Charles II. Heading south along the Three Choirs Way, the path led to the Victorian Spa Town of Great Malvern, before ascending onto the scenic Malvern Hills and along the ridgeline – giving spectacular views of the surrounding area and reaching the highest point of 425m at the Worcestershire Beacon. The British Camp Hill Fort which is an Iron Age fort first constructed in the 2nd century BC is then conquered, after which participants descended onto Castlemorton, the common which in 1992 saw 20,000 revellers attend the UK’s biggest ever illegal rave, and consequently resulted in the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act being passed. The route subsequently headed east back onto the River Severn, then north along the river, completing the loop back to Fish Meadow.

The route was a mixture of established national trails, bridal ways, footpaths, riverbanks and connecting tarmac roads. Each stage offered a diverse range of environments, from open hills, grassy meadows, sprawling commons, wooded paths and expanses of flood plain.

Each leg was clearly marked, with three check points at 15km, 30km and 42k which offered a variety of food and drink.

The event, open to people of all levels from first timers to pros, had no cut-off times, making sure everyone who took part was given the chance to complete the route either running or walking.

MAD MALVERN HARE

The Mad Malvern Hare was a tale of two halves with a 50mile loop that kept the Malvern Hills always in sight. Perfect for first time sportive riders the climbs were short (if a little sharp!) and the reward was spectacular views across Herefordshire. The 2nd loop that made up the 100mile route was the east side of the river around Bredon Hill and north into the Worcestershire countryside. The final stretch back to HQ had great views of both the Malvern Hills and Breedon Hill either side of a long and winding country road.

“The most beautiful 50 mile bike ride I’ve ever done!”

Whilst the events were still restricted by CV19 guidance, the weekend was very successful with nearly 1000 people taking part over the 3 events. There was great feedback from participants and months of planning both routes paid off as this was the most talked about element of each event. “Stunning scenery”, “Beautiful surroundings”, “Great Organisation” were just a few of the comments we received. And, whilst we were not actively encouraging spectators to the events this year, there was a healthy crowd on both days, eating and drinking in the sunshine!

Summing up the weekend’s activities, Dean Brennan, Cube’s Event Director said, “Amidst a very challenging summer where other events have either been postponed or cancelled, it was great to get our inaugural Upton Ultra and Mad Hare events up and running. The star of the weekend was the fantastic routes that the team put together. All the positive feedback we received from the entrants reflected this. Whilst restrictions limited how much we could do within the event village, our plans for 2022 will focus on this area with more family activities and a wider F&B offering.”

NEXT YEAR’S EVENT

Plans for 2022 are underway to add more family activities, more spectator activations and more beautiful routes through the Worcestershire and Herefordshire countryside.
