Life as a Cube Management Events Apprentice

“My journey started with Cube Management when I did a work placement for the company at the Special Olympics event (SOGB) in Sheffield in 2017. It gave me a taste of the events industry and I really enjoyed all the work involved. Working alongside the athletes was totally amazing and a real eyeopener. This led to me to being offered an event apprenticeship with Cube at the beginning of 2018. The training programme is organised through Realise. It’s an 18 months course where I attend workshops in London throughout the year, as well as completing assignments on its learning management system. I hope to complete the apprenticeship by the end of 2019.

Being an apprentice at Cube Management has been an unbelievable experience. Although the year has been really busy, I have loved every minute of it. I was able to travel to various events all over the world, working at UEFA Futsal Euro, the F1 Grand Prix’s, NFL London Games and the Valderrama Masters. Cube has given me a massive opportunity; I have visited 11 countries, experienced various cultures and met lots of great people. The apprenticeship has, to date, not only given me experience in events, it has also given me valuable travel and life skills.

UEFA Futsal Euro
The first event of the year for me was the UEFA Futsal Euro in Slovenia. Our client needed to build six shops inside the stadium to sell its merchandise, with a full temporary shop fit in each for display and retail purposes. We also installed a small retail unit in the VIP area. I stayed on throughout the tournament to help build the units and co-ordinate the stock and sellers.
Best Moments: The snow, the food and the after-event party!

F1 Grand Prix
Cube delivers event infrastructure and support to its client, the official Formula One merchandiser, across Europe and Asia. In 2018, I was lucky enough to work at 10 of these events; being involved in the planning, helping to manage the build-up, offering support and help throughout the events as well as organising the breakdowns. I drove the Cube van to most of the events in Europe which was subsequently used as an on-event office whilst out there and most useful for carrying equipment and tools. I was able to see how the F1 Fan Zones come together at each event and was particularly impressed by how they are built in such a short space of time ready for all the fans to experience. Our F1 season started in Bahrain and ended in Abu Dhabi but, in between, I enjoyed Shanghai, Russia and lots of European countries.
Best Moments: Experiencing the cities, culture and food, but also beating my boss at karting!

NFL London Games
The NFL London Games took place across three weekends in October, where we delivered event planning, the retail structures and on-event management for NFL London’s official retail partners. We set up a 90x20m tent structure with an internal shop fit and installed a kilometre-long queuing system at each event. I was involved in the planning, build and support at each event. Comparing it to the Formula One events I had been involved in, I was able to see and experience how very different in nature live events can be.
Best Moments: Finishing the queuing system and watching the teams coming out onto the pitch on the big screen.

Valderrama Golf Masters
The Valderrama Masters is a golf tournament that takes place in the south of Spain. Our client, the merchandise supplier for the event, wanted its mobile merchandise van from the Ryder Cup venue in Paris transporting and operating on the event. Assigned this task, I boarded the London-Paris EuroStar train, got a taxi to the Ryder Cup golf venue, picked up the keys, then the van and there my journey on the motorways of France and Spain started. It took just over 2 days. I stayed in Spain during the event and managed the sales of the merchandise. Unfortunately, the weather was terrible, so the organisers did not attract as many spectators as they had hoped. My journey back also took longer than anticipated as the ferries from Bilbao were fully booked. It therefore took me three days to drive the van back to Cardiff, where it is based, having to take a detour via Calais.
Best Moments: I have played and competed in many junior golf tournaments, so watching the players warm up and tee off was just fabulous.

My year as Cube’s events apprentice has been truly amazing and has taught me so many things, I can’t wait to see what 2019 will bring!”
